For
many centuries, coordinate systems have been used to determine the
position on the surface of the Earth. Modern sign language is a
comparatively recent system.
The video project "99 Locations" by Kai Fobbe links both systems by means of a 99-part performance. A man stands in front of a camera and illustrates his respective location in sign language.
Visualized in sign language, longitudes and latitudes define 99 locations in the Bergisches Land (North Rhine-Westphalia: 51°15'25,5"-7°6'5,6": The burial place of Pina Bausch . 51°15´34,2“-7°7´45,5“: The Opera House and 51°15´26,2“-7°8´46,8“: The Von der Heydt-Museum in Wuppertal. 51°11´37,6“-7°7´6,3“: A Bergisch Kotten. 51°9´43,2“-7°8´11,4“: The Müngsten viaduct in Solingen…

These video clips that were created at 99 locations form a
danced GPS system. A very real guide for people interested in culture
and travelling encoded in sign language. An image that is seemingly
familiar to the spectator but yet confusing.

Koordinatensysteme
zur Bestimmung der Position auf der Erdoberfläche sind schon seit
vielen Jahrhunderten im Einsatz. Die moderne Gebärdensprache ist ein
vergleichsweise junges Zeichensystem.
Die Videoinstallation „99 Orte“ von Kai Fobbe verknüpft beide Systeme in einer 99-teiligen Performance. Ein Mann tritt vor die Kamera. In Gebärdensprache verrät er seinen jeweiligen Standort.
